10:30 am Departure from the 131 Gravel Pit off The Parks Highway

This is an intermediate ride due to distance, side hilling and water crossing requirements. We will travel 80 miles round trip. Approximately 24 miles are on established trails, 27 miles on the Tokositna River – with only sled trails and the remaining 18 miles in the untracked Kanikula River Valley. Departure is at 10:30 am. Please arrive early and be ready to leave on time. After we leave the trail and ride up the Tokositna & Kanikula Rivers we have always encountered shallow open water crossings before we get to the glacier. There is some moderate side hilling and tree dodging to get around the river. We will retrace our tracks back down the river and trails, returning to 131. Bring your camera, extra gas, lunch and water. Plan on arriving back at the parking lot around 6 PM.

We rode a 75 mile trip out of 131 on Saturday, March 4 and the rivers were very solid. Snow depth in the valleys is about half the normal so terrain and conditions are more challenging. With the coming week of warm weather the rivers will likely start to flow and we may have to find alternate snow bridge routes to the final destination. No new snow is in the forecast. The Kanikula Glacier has changed a lot since our last trip with many large ice blocks falling to the valley floor.  Ride Leader:  Jerry Siok
