IMPORTANT UPDATE AS OF 3/11/21:  There’s been over a FOOT of new snow in the Tokistina Flats with yesterdays storm.  This ride will now be considered deep-snow powder ride all the way all-day with no “groomed trails”.  Please be prepared with portable shovels and extra gas jug stowed securely.  Longer-track machines highly recommended.  Bring extra socks just in case.  Arrive early to assure your parking spot.

One of the club’s MOST POPULAR club day rides !  Kanikula Glacier in South Denali

We will travel via the Tokisitna Winter Loop trail that goes through Denali State Park so be sure you have a current Alaska snowmachine registration:

http://doa.alaska.gov/dmv/reg/snow.htm

This is an intermediate ride due to distance, potential side-hilling and potential water crossing requirements. Departure is from the parking lot at MP131 on the Parks Highway at 10:30 AM (please park early and close together to conserve space, popular staging lot!).  Expect a riders meeting shortly before departure and be ready to leave on time. We will travel via the Tokositna Flats Winter Trail and at the appropriate river crossing we will leave the trail and ride up the Tokositna River where we have always encountered shallow open water crossings before we get to the glacier.  Route includes:

North Loop Trail for 13 miles
Tokositna River for 13 miles
Kanikula River for the last 8-10 miles
Round Trip is 70-75 miles (possibly add miles dependent on available river crossings)

There is some potential side hilling and tree dodging to get around the river.  On return we will retrace our tracks back down the river and trails. Bring your camera, lunch or snack and water.  As of 3/9 Tuesday afternoon it is snowing presently and the forecast is for more snow.  It is always deeper toward the park–be sure to bring extra fuel and plan on a lot of off groomed-trail riding.  Plan on arriving back at the parking lot around 6 PM.
